Prairie Winter
Whiter than white

I ride feeling
On Babe, my horse, I’m home

Cows coming home for the night
We walk behind a small herd
a boundless landscape
nature’s blanket infinite snow sunset

Winter rays refract through
bend and dim
I stare into the sun’s centre
too young to know better
About danger of seeing into the sun

I ride into the glow
Sun curcle vibrates
Concentric orbs dance
Winter rays refract
Fly to me surround me
Sweep me into an aureole cave
Transport me to
the luminous centre

My vision all yellow now projects

Herford cows’ faces snow caps on cedar posts
Frost on branches whiter than white world
Shine twinkle with internalized gilded radiance

When the herd walks into the barnyard
I am back at work I dismount from Babe
Step up to the well’s wood cover
Hand pump water into trough for
Twenty-five cows and my horse
